Willow Grove is a “census designated place” that straddles Upper Dublin Township, Abington Township, and Upper Moreland Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Like nearby King of Prussia, Willow Grove is considered an “edge city” of Philadelphia. Just 13 miles north of Philly, Willow Grove is a popular location for shopping and office space.
Willow Grove was once best known for Willow Grove Park, an amusement park that operated for 80 years. Its famous Music Pavilion often hosted concerts by John Philip Sousa, who wrote many patriotic marches, including The Stars and Stripes Forever. After the park was closed in 1976, the three story Willow Grove Park Mall was built on the site in 1982. The mall was built with an upscale Victorian theme in homage to the park it replaced, with Bloomingdale’s as one of its anchor stores. Willow Grove Park Mall currently consists of over 130 stores and many dining options, including The Cheesecake Factory and Yard House.
Willow Grove is home to roughly 16,000 residents, and is part of the Abington School District, Upper Dublin School District, and Upper Moreland School District. Willow Grove has an interchange on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 276), as well as a station on the SEPTA rail line to Philadelphia. It is also serviced by several SEPTA bus routes. First Lady Jill Biden grew up in Willow Grove, although she was born in Hammonton, New Jersey.
