King of Prussia is not technically a town or even a borough. It is a “census designated place” in Upper Merion Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Nevertheless, this thriving area has a population of over 22,000 and continues to grow. Its unique history, convenient location, and abundance of shopping and dining opportunities make King of Prussia a great place to live!
King of Prussia was named after the King of Prussia Inn, which hosted many guests throughout the late 1700’s–including General George Washington–since it was located one day’s travel by horse from Philadelphia. The community that later sprung up there continues to benefit from its proximity to Philadelphia and its convenience to travelers. Four major highways now converge in King of Prussia–the Schuylkill Expressway (1-76), The Pennsylvania Turnpike, US 422, and US 202. King of Prussia is considered an “edge city” of Philadelphia, a previously suburban area that received substantial economic growth and development.
King of Prussia is best known for the King of Prussia mall, which is the third largest US shopping complex and the largest in Pennsylvania. The KOP mall includes more than 450 stores and 40 restaurants, including 3 food courts. More recently, King of Prussia Town Center has been developed as an upscale downtown experiential shopping experience, featuring outdoor shopping and dining along Main Street and an expansive Town Square designed for gathering.
